If you are in New Zealand and wish to apply for a Student Permit, you need to allow sufficient time for a decision to be made on your application before your current Permit expires.  If your Permit does expire, your application for a further Permit does not make your stay in New Zealand lawful, or give you the right to remain in New Zealand while your application is being considered.
